In a nutshell, a Graphic Designer's role in an advertising/marketing campaign is to please the client, who is only concerned about making money. It may sound harsh and greedy, but in our capitalistic society, companies are out to make money. Graphic Designers help them make money.
Graphic Designers are charged with solving a problem for the client--that problem often times is the client not making money. Research is required to answer important questions in order to achieve a successful design product. Why are is the company not making money? Is its product reaching its target audience? Is the message about the product clear? Are the marketing materials outdated? Too similar to the competition? Distinctive enough? Too cluttered? The wrong color? Not legible?
A Graphic Designer brings to the table the experience and know-how, will ask the critical questions...because every Graphic Designer should want to please the customer in order to add portfolio pieces to their repertoire and gain exposure themselves, because going full-circle, the Graphic Designer, like his or her client, is also out to make money.
